The water doesn't always have to be blue.
The Brisbane SUP Club are probably the newest SUP clubs in Australia. They’d be in the top three anyway. But what they’ve done with a tiny stand up paddling population of less than 10, is nothing short of remarkable.
Last weekend they ran a BOP event at Shorncliffe, an old beach that was popular in the 60’s because it had shark nets and a jetty, but now only good for cyclone surfing for those looking for a bit of a novelty. But back to the point, the BrisSUP club has 40 people competing in their Battle of the Paddle event! Not to mention the social paddles they have every week. They trek to Manly, down to Bribie and everywhere in between. Currently they have 52 members in total, with more joining by the day.
It’s great to see a small group of paddlers grow the sport so fast, and so professionally in such a short space of time. Watch this space, because before long we’ll be bringing news of Australia’s next top racer emerging from some place other than white sandy beaches with perfect blue water…
If you know of anyone in Brisbane who’s thinking about getting into stand up paddling, get them to look up the Brisbane SUP Club, or BrisSUP for short. You can find them on facebook here.
