The largest fish ever caught on a stand up paddle board
Is this the biggest fish to be caught on a SUP?
Recent trends in the worlds most fastest growing watersport seem to be pushing the racing and surfing disciplines out of the spotlight, with SUP fishing gaining more and more publicity online. Fishing has always been more of a novelty than a serious endeavour, until recent years when stand up paddling companies released fishing specific boards, like the Starboard Fisherman, it's now become a viable option for catching dinner!
This week a picture emerged on various websites, of a guy in Florida holding a huge sailfish. Very quickly the image came under scrutiny from viewers, with many claiming the fish had to be caught from a boat, and later transferred to the board. Others reported that the fisherman had not released the fish back into the water, and the whole thing ended up in a bit of a mess.
Luckily the man in question settled the argument with a few words about the catch.
"Sailfish are cherished on our coast and caught with catch-and-release tactics. People think this is completely staged and/or fake, but the joke is on them as I had a camera crew follow me throughout the day. We have the entire bite, fight and release on video without any boat assistance. Unfortunately, our second season of Florida Sport Fishing TV doesn’t air until July so all of the haters have to wait until then. People are really ignorant about what can be accomplished on a SUP… "
A little closer to home, Ocean Addicts are having a fishing competition at the moment. Check out their Facebook page here for entry details, but in the true spirit of sport, the catch and release is the prize, so don't expect any freebies!
When the video from this amazing catch gets aired in July, someone's sure to post it online. As soon as they do, we'll be sure to keep you in the loop!
