The Merimbula Classic Mid Weekend Report

Blue Skies, Small swell and the QLD grommies running around whinging about the cold, it must be mid weekend at the Merimbula Classic!

With two days down and two to go, conditions are on the improve with the wind swinging back to the typical North East direction and swell size increasing by the minute. Stand Up Paddlers are getting the best conditions out on the bar rather than the beach, with an extra few feet worth of swell, but still nothing powerful enough to throw a lip just yet.

The party SUP from Fanatic has been out all weekend with six man teams battling to paddle in a straight line, of course with hilarious results! Demo stand up paddle boards are flying thick and fast with all the big names in Stand Up Paddling camped out with demo fleets in the park. The world famous Merimbula Barbeque is raging 24/7, feeding hungry paddlers, kiters and windsurfers alike. Are we making you jealous yet? Merimbula Sailboard Club puts on one heck of an event, and we haven’t even mentioned the evenings parties!!!

On the more serious side of the stand up paddling event, Kai Bates from the Fanatic team has been a standout on the first two days, making the most of the larger waves down on the Merimbula Bar to catch the judges attention. He’s not the only one down there though, but we’ll leave our pick for the top three open, simply because there are so many paddlers in the running!

This weekend will feature all the novelty races, downwinders and more of the great surfing conditions for paddlers, so we’ll be back early next week with a full event report from the 2014 Merimbula Classic! On this week in Merimbula
