Sunset Beach turns it on for the Stand Up World Tour
That's only 12 foot? Yeah right!!
When the hawaiians say it's 12ft. They're not talking about the wave height, they're talking about some other kind of measurement from way (and we mean WAY) out the back. By the time that 12ft something gets to the point where it jacks up and breaks. We Aussies would say it's 20ft. So when you hear reports talking about 12 foot swell, don't think 12 foot Australian (which would be epic over here). Think 20 foot. On a stand up paddle board. Awwwww yeah! That's a surf comp!
Out amongst it, are Aussies Dave Muir and Jackson Close. They're doing battle with paddling greats like Kai Lenny (who only just beat Dave in the heats) and Kody Kerbox who can be basically considered locals to the iconic Hawaiian beach. Also surfing very well at this stage of the competition is Kala Alexander from Kauai. He pulled into the biggest barrel of the day, before catching a rail on his exit which put a dampener on his wave to say the least.
Over the next few days we'll know more about who's coming where (and hopefully see some video). But until then, watch it all live! Check out the feed on their website to watch it, or stay tuned to the Seabreeze.com.au Stand Up Paddling forums to read the first hand reports, gossip and news from the event.
