Stand up paddle Surfing in Mackay, courtesy of Cyclone Fina
You don't often get swell like this in Mackay, but Joe Millen from ARSA managed to score a few waves this week when residual swell from Tropical Cyclone Fina rolled down the coast.
Not only did he get a few waves, he also copped a mates stand up paddle board in the head - knocking him clean off his own board. Check out the video for a closer look, but basically Joe's a taken off on a wave, then the poor guy on the shoulder has been sideways as the wave picked up him - driving the nose of the board around into his head. You can't blame anyone though, Mackay thinks a 1 foot swell is huge!
Last time Mackay got a swell like this was during Cyclone Yasi early this year. The strong winds made it virtually impossible to get a decent SUP in, and of course there was more important things to be doing, like boarding up windows and sandbagging doorways.
Check out the video for all the action, and remember - that swell is bigger than it looks! GoPro footage always flattens out the swell and makes even the most epic days look flat as a tack.
