Stand Up Paddling with Dolphins in Port Phillip Bay
According to DJ, there was little in the way of wind or swell, but the dolphins more than made up for the lacklustre conditions.
DJ to those that know him, or David John to the rest of us, posts at least one video a week on the Seabreeze.com.au forums. Whether it's of a new GoPro mount, or of the latest Stand up paddle board he's road testing, there's something posted on Vimeo for the world to see.
This week was no different, when an otherwise average stand up paddle with a few mates turned into something extraordinary, DJ caught it on head cam. He was actually testing a new 14" downwinder board from Walk on Water, but the dolphins soon became more fun than the board, especially considering the lack of wind for their downwinder. The Port Phillip bay area in Victoria is home to over 120 dolphins according to current research, and stand up paddlers frequently see them swimming all over the bay, often in close proximity to the paddlers. But these dolphins certainly don't seem disturbed by the stand up paddlers, even swimming right under the boards.
Check it out for yourself, and don't forget the GoPro camera next time you're going for a paddle! Without it, DJ wouldn't have had such an awesome video to show us!
