Stand Up Paddling Bono - Tidal Bore Surfing in Indonesia

Surfing the giant standing wave. Up to 10 minute rides!
You might think this is just another celebrity story about some famous guy from U2 getting on a stand up paddle board for two minutes. But nope, this ones got some credibility. And it's definitely worth the read...

In the mouth of a river somewhere in Indonesia, there's amazing things happening. It's not every day, and we don't even know if it's been happening for very long, but the tidal bore waves at Kampar River are something special that have to be seen to be believed.

As the outgoing tide flows quickly out of the river mouth, it hits the sandbanks and creates these huge standing waves that peel perfectly down the side of the river bank, as far as the eye can see. It's called 'The Bono' and according to Giancarlo "Jankie" Avancini, surfing it is something that every surfer should add to their bucket list.

Back in late 2010, Frenchman Mr. Anthony Colas (who's an expert on such things apparently) took a trip to undo to investigate the site where he thought there 'should' be a decent standing wave. They expected something in the 2-3 foot range, but when they arrived to see 8-10 foot swell; well, no need to explain!

Ever since then surfers have flocked to the spot, even the Rip Curl Search took pro surfers like Tom Curren and Dean Brady to sample the natural wonder that is 'The Bono'. Now, there's surf tours that go there when the river is expected to break, and a hardcore group of locals who surf the break whenever it's working, close to shore and with home made boards!

Stoked after a recent trip to the Bono with only him and his mate, Jankie tells SUPConnect all about the trip, how it works and basically makes everyone extremely envious of his trip. So if you feel like spending about 10 minutes making yourself positively green. Check out the story here.
