Stand Up Paddling - A unique way to make a difference

If you've ever paddled a stand up paddle board, chances are you noticed something truly unique to the sport - and that is the fact you can see very clearly underwater around your board.

Apart from the obvious niceties of looking at the fish and sea-life underwater, you can also see the rubbish and various nasties lurking about down there. And in a time where new years resolutions are a plenty, why not make a difference this year and pick some of it up?

There's of course the conventional way of kneeling down and picking it up with your hands, or even diving off to pick up the odd aluminium can floating a little deeper down. This guy from the USA has thought of an ingenious method however; he's simply added a net to the back of his paddle blade.

Now the stand up paddle purists among us may tell of turbulence inducing, drag creating setbacks of attaching such a device; and they are most definitely right. However at the end of the day, if you're going to be picking up rubbish in the middle of a race, you probably shouldn't be racing anyway. Such a device wouldn't be hard to make, and if you're that worried about drag - simply bend down and pick it up...

Check out the video below for a little inspiration - and why not make it a new years SUP resolution to pick up more rubbish this year, or even at least one piece of rubbish every paddle?
