Stand Up Paddlers tackle massive waves at Jaws

In what’s looking to be a month of great swell in Hawaii, a select group of stand up paddlers have conquered what most surfers only dream of. Dropping into the face of Jaws, or Peahi as it’s know to the locals.

Of course you already know who the pro’s are. Connor Baxter and his mate Kai Lenny. These two are some of the tiny group of paddlers who are capable of doing such a thing, and not only did they ‘do it’. They did it with class.

Check out the video below to see how it all panned out earlier this month, Conner takes the cake for the biggest wave, but Lenny’s is a little smoother and he gets bonus points for the barrel. Maybe it’s got something to do with all the big wave paddling he’s been doing lately. Did you see the fin chop from hell he suffered after going over the falls at the very same spot?

Well after a quick recovery he’s back at the iconic big wave break. Dropping in like nothing ever happened.

Jaws, or properly known as Peahi, in Hawaii has been known for it’s heavy waves since the 1980’s when a few crazy windsurfers sailed upwind from Hookipa to surf the 80ft swell. News of the spot spread, and with the popularization of jetski’s, tow in surfing became popular there during the 90’s. Now familiar faces in the stand up paddling world, Dave Kalama and Laird Hamilton brought the location to the masses with the pair even playing stunt double for James Bond in 2001. Since then it’s been overcrowded with everyone from surfers to stand up paddlers, and even a few kites have tried to get in there and try their luck at one of the most famous big-wave locations in the world.

SUP’s have never gone this big though! Check it out!
