Stand Up Paddle companies turn to surfboards.
Starboard started the trend earlier in the year, and this week Naish reached out with the tagline “Rediscover your roots” to announce their line of surfboards. We’re not talking about stand up paddle surfboards, this is the lay down, paddle out and wait for three days to catch a wave kind of surfboard.
Ones you can duckdive and do aerials and paddle out into crowded line-ups with. Sub 5kg boards, with no handle necessary.
We don’t know for sure, but with the likes of Gerry Lopez behind the Naish surfboards, they’re going to surf alright. Starboard are going down the super high-tech line, with their ‘Active Carbon’ construction at the front and centre of their advertising.
The grey/carbon sanded look surfboards weigh as little as 2kg (for the 5’7”) and come in heaps of new-age sizes, from a 5’0 right up to a great looking 9’3” Mini Mal.
Naish start at 5’10, in all yellow of course, with a quad setup and outline designed for smaller waves. On the upper end they’re doing a 10’0 mini mal style, again in yellow. They’ve also got a range of sizes in between which all use the FCS fin mount.
Check out the Naish Surfboard and Starboard Surf websites to find out more about the new surfboards, or drop by your local stand up paddling shop if you’re keen to get down on your belly and paddle like you used to.
Will the super powers of stand up paddling take over local Aussie shapers in the surfboard market?
