Snow in QLD - but Epic for Downwinders!
The Jacksons (Paul and Angie) and a group of eager paddlers went for a downwinder in Brisbane's Moreton Bay, braving the icy conditions - 15 degree daytime air temperatures with water temps of around 20 degrees. While that might not seem cold for stand up paddlers in Melbourne or Tassie, the QLD'ers were outraged at having to peel off 3mm wetsuits!
Winter Stand Up Paddling in Brisbane is actually pretty perfect, there's something for all style of paddling, with both light and strong winds alternating throughout the season. Prevailing blue skies keep the day temps in the high teens or low 20's, and weekly SW'erlies start blowing from July through to September. These 20-30 knot fronts are idea for runs across the bay, with plenty of options starting on either side of Brisbane. For the surfers and racers, the alternate weeks of glassy conditions are perfect. Westerly winds keep wave faces clean, with small but fun beachies on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts offering plenty for surfers. Racers are also enjoying perfect training conditions with the cool temps and flat water (and no jellyfish!) helping distance runs.
