SUP VIC launches their new 'Starship' for members.
“It’s good to get a big sup for the club, I knew it needed one.” Says Oliver Bode, the man behind the board. “I think it will be a lot of fun, like a giant surf mat! Hopefully it should be a lot of fun for a lot of people for a long time to come.”
The mega board measures up at 18’x 60”x 9”, and is more than capable of supporting 8 average adults, all with their very own paddle. Coordinating such an effort seems to be somewhat of an ordeal however, so the guys from SUP VIC choose to run teams of 4 or 6 paddlers for maximum fun. It’s basically Starboards version of the SUPZilla’s we’ve seen from almost every stand up paddle board manufacturer who does inflatables, except this one from Starboard seems more at home in the flat water. With a very shallow nose rocker, the Starship proved troublesome in the waves, instead preferring to go spear nose first underwater as you’ll see in the video below – not that we mind, the results were hilarious.
Fundraised through the ‘Maiden Voyage’ event, SUP VIC members had the opportunity to paddle the Starboard Starship on her maiden voyage at Torquay. For a $100 donation, there was no bottled of champagne, but there was a never ending supply of laughs as the members tried to work out how to ride the thing. They were also treated to a barbeque, an awesome t-shirt and even a ride to the beach in Oliver's Kombi for their donation to the club.
With the board paid for, and a list of events a mile high for the club, there’s nothing left to do now but paddle! (Once the board has been inflated of course!) Look out for the SUP VIC Starboard Starship SUP at their next event, or any other events around Australia!
