Raised by Legends - Positively Kai SUP

Kai and Robby Naish - his Hawaiian 'Uncle'
Can you imagine being able to call guys like Dave Kalama and Robby Naish, 'Uncle'? That's what Kai Lenny calls them, even though they're not actually related.

In this episode of Positively Kai (the Red Bull mini series on YouTube), we get to see Kai as he's being trained and guided by both Dave Kalame and Robby Naish. Both legends in a variety of watersports, some say they are the original waterman. There's a lot of stand up paddling, some surfing, a little kiteboarding and of course some obscenely expensive exercises from Red Bull.

The whole hawaiian 'uncle' thing is quite an inspirational story. As Kalama puts it,
"Uncles' in Hawaii is kind of; a much broader term. Because it's anybody that kind of looks after you, or is a figure of authority; it's sort of a sign of respect"

Naish also mentors Lenny as more than just a boss. "As he (Kai) has grown, our relationship has grown too. I'm talking to him a lot about finances, sponsorships you know - making the right decisions for the long term."

Apart from all the soppy uncle talk, what's in it for you? Aside from some light entertainment and inspiration, there's a couple of golden nuggets in there from Mr Kalama, and although his statements are quite broad, you can compare Kai's stroke with yours. Are you pulling back too far in your stroke? Is your recovery taking too long? Stand on some sticks and make sure your paddle is out of the water before you hit them. Compare and see!
