Play your own SUP theme music - while surfing!
It was all in the name of recreating the classic ad for Fender Guitars, made back in 1960’s (pictured adjacent), with a modern day twist! While the original was done on a surfboard, probably sounding quite terrible considering there was no amp attached to the electric guitar, this recreation DID feature an amp!
Wrapped in plastic, the amp was sat on the tail of the board and hooked up to a modern era Fender guitar. Musician and stand up paddler Michael Dolsey was the guy behind it all, and claims it’s a world record which has never been done before.
This feat is so out-of-the-box that we’d believe him.
"This was not easy to do.." Said Dolsey. "I had to paddle out into the line up, paddle into a wave, with out loosing the guitar, amp, or paddle.. turn on the camera..I had a remote control for the Magicam SD21 cam, ride the wave long enough to play part of a song, not fall, and paddle back out with out having another wave damage the gear, or knock me off the board.....I am proud of this!"
Released in 1963, the song Wipeout by the Surfaris is a song recognized anywhere. It’s got the classic surf vibes and will instantly conjure memories of hot sun, white sand and guys with surfboards under their arms. Michael played it perfectly too!
Check out the video of it below, turn the sound up because it’s a little soft.
