Painting with light, and a paddle

Painting with a paddle... Photo: Motion Exposure
Just when you think you’ve seen it all, some guy shows up with a fancy paddle and makes some inspiring pictures to set you straight. Paddling is a sport of beauty, and this proves it.

Stephen Orlando is a Canadian photographer that paints with lights. Programmable LED strips to be exact, which can be combined with long exposure photography to create really unique light trails. Pictured here is the result of attaching these lights to a paddle, in this case it’s a canoe paddle, but we’re sure you stand up paddlers out there can appreciate the beauty in any kind of paddle stroke.

'Lightpainting' is becoming popular with artists in recent months thanks to advances in LED lighting, and prices becoming crazy cheap. These light bars are simple aluminium tubes with LED lights every few centimetres, a programmable timer and 12v battery.

Taking images like these can be done with almost any decent camera, so why not give something like this a try yourself! Or, simply use Stephen’s pictures a bit of inspiration to get out there and try something different.

You can view his full collection of images here, which include subjects kayaking, swimming, riding bikes and playing football.
