Night Stand Up Paddle Racing in Auckland

Epic conditions for a race...
Those crazy Kiwi's have dreamed up yet another awesome idea, Stand up paddling at night! But not just paddling, all out racing in the the Jett City Surf Series!

Although marketed as the first stand up paddle boarding race to be held at night, there are a few others that have tried it before. The logistics of holding the race int he dark are slightly more troublesome, mainly because of the 100 million glow sticks the competitors brought and attached to themselves. But mostly due to needing boats with spotlights, ground based spotlights and of course rescue boats to pick up drowning paddlers who are afraid of the dark.

Looks like the sponsors really came to the party too! With the big names like Red Bull in attendance as well as all the small local companies that helped out, all the paddlers were stoked with how well the event was run and everyone had a ball. You can be sure they'll be back again for next years event! Just ask Mfogs, who said earlier today in the Seabreeze.com.au forums:

"It was slick, the venue was St Marys Bay which is right beside Westhaven Marina in Aucklands CBD, which made it very accessible and also sheltered! There were different categories which catered for all from novice through to the hardcore. A few Olympic sailors competed, and that helped to attract a news crew and meant it was featured in the sports section of the following nights national news. Bring on next year!"
