Malfunction Festival of Surfing Wraps Up - Stand Up Paddling

Stand Up Paddle Surfing at the Malfunction Festival
Contestants flocked from all over Australia to the one of the biggest events on the East coast - most of which made the short drive down the coast from the Noosa Festival of surfing the week before. The Malfunction festival is a celebration of all things surf related, you name it - they had it there over the week, Mals, SUP's, Retro boards, surfers cars and an awesome lineup of bands playing throughout the heats and into the night.
Stand Up Paddling really shone throughout the event, where blue skies and 1-3 foot swell allowed everyone to enjoy the festival, surfing in fantastic conditions. Kingscliffe provided a perfect location for the event, and although a little small and shallow at times, was breaking well - much better than Noosa did last week!
The Queenslanders put on a great show in the Greenline SUP finals, with Justin Holland (Gold Coast) taking out Luke Egan (Coolangatta) in the SUP pro division. These boys put on a powerful display of SUP surfing for the crowd in the small conditions, with Egan throwing buckets of spray off his backhand all event long.
It wasn't all about the surfing though, Starboard hosted a racing event - which proved to be challenging for all competitors! The course ran out around a marker, which was set super close to a bank of rocks. the low tide made things worse, with a couple of competitors ending up on the sharp rocks, putting an end to their day.
Both the mens Pro and Amateur divisions were close races, with Travis Grant taking out the Pro division, and Dion Parlee winning the Amateurs. The girls were just as close - with Simone Horsefield and Melissa McManus winning the Pro and Am divisions. The womens pro finish was almost a photo finish, with Angie only just missing out on first place by several centimetres.
If you missed the action, mark it in your calendar for next year - take 3 weeks off for both the Noosa festival of surfing, and Malfunction. Both events were great, well run and everyone had an absolute ball. As usual, thanks to the organisers and sponsors for making it all happen - and congratulations to all the competitors, thanks for the show!
