Kick turns with Beau O'Brien

Get that big ol' board around a "boo-ey"...
“G’Day, I’m Beau O’Brien and today I’m gonna give ya a few tips on how to do a kick turn”

Do you stand up paddle? Do you race? Do you find that awkwardly long raceboard hard to turn around a ‘boo-ey’ (buoy). Beau O’Brien has the answers for us in this short clip about the kick turn.

It’s the fastest way to get around a marker when you’re racing, but it’s not the easiest thing to do without falling off.

Beau’s tips are:

-As the nose of your board passes the marker, jump back on your board with your legs wide.

-Get your center of gravity low by bending your knees

-Push the paddle blade way out wide and continue stroking hard

-As the nose lifts and the board pivots around the marker, jump forwards into your paddling position once again and keep paddling for the next one.

It’s better when you see it, take particular notice of Beau’s position on the board, he’s not too far back, just far enough to lift the nose clear of the water and pivot around the mark.

Give it a try next time you’re out on the water, it’ll make those turns much faster, and impress your mates too. Just don’t do those ridiculous 720 degree spin things we’ve seen. That’s weird…
