Kai Lenny's 'best week ever' after winning SUP World Tour
Lenny on his winning wave
Big swell swept the beach at Turtle Bay Hawaii for the finals of the Stand Up World Tour last week, but competitors rose to the occasion putting on a fantastic show for the crowd with some close racing and of course big spills.
Winning both the long distance events and the sprints, Kai Lenny narrowly edged out Danish competitor Casper Steinfath in a photo finish, after 4 competitors caught the same wave right to the beach in the finals round of the spring competition. For it to be such a close final, the other competitors should be proud of their achievements, because (even Lenny said it himself) it could have been anyones race.
Even the commentator had to double check what he was saying, a Danish paddler only milliseconds behind Hawaiian born and bred Kai Lenny? It seemed unthinkable, especially at such an iconic Hawaiian location like Turtle bay! Other highlights of the event included the event favourite Connor Baxter going out in style, taking a few falls and ending up way back in the pack during the final. And of course the event going ahead in the furst place was great news, after the Stand Up World Tour suffered a heap of event changes, cancellations and mishaps throughout the year. It's great to see the event has finished the season with such a well run event, of course every new series has it's teething problems, but it looks like this one has got its act together for 2013, and we'll be bringing you lots more news and action from the new Stand Up World Tour.
Back to Lenny though, here's what he had to say after the event,
"The most epic week of my life so far! Turned 20 last Monday, paddled perfect big Jaws on Tuesday and Wednesday won the long distance race from Turtle Bay to Haleiwa on Saturday and won the Sprint Race on Sunday. Finally clinched my first SUP Race World Title to top it off!!! Yeah the best week of my life!”
He'll be in Australia soon too! With a list as long as his SUP board, Lenny's making a whirlwind trip around the east coast starting on the 2nd of November down south at Wind Surf N Snow for the first Aussie Nisco race. He'll be whizzing all over the place until the 11th of November where he's competing in the Jetty to Jetty race down south again in SA. You can find out where he'll be on the Naish Australia Facebook page, or call your local Naish dealer for details.
