How to do a headstand on your SUP Board

Standing on your head is not as easy as it looks...
As you’ve probably seen, SUP Yoga is taking over the world. If you (like us) are struggling to stroke a pose, we’ve got some tips on how to perform the coolest Yoga position around, the headstand.

There are now entire companies based around SUP Yoga, like the guys who made this video. The art of posing atop a wobbly floating platform has untold challenges associated with it, and that’s why women (and men) all over the world are ditching the paddle, and trying to ‘stand up’, albeit on their heads. So how do you perform this awe inspiring move? Here’s some tips.

Make sure you’re in flat water, very flat. The slightest ripple, or the slightest gust of wind is going to greatly increase the risk of getting wet. So will boat wake, jet ski wash and screaming children. Yoga is about being peaceful.

Take it slow. Again, one of the key points when it comes to Yoga is control. Keep things purposeful, slow and in control.

We recommend the ‘Tripod’ method for your first headstand. Kneel down and place your head on the board. Space your hands so that you can still see them in your peripheral vision, then slowly walk your feet forward. Keeping control, raise your knees to rest on your arms, then extend your feet to the sky.

It’s about this point you’ll probably fall off, but don’t give up! Keep trying and soon you’ll be able to headstand like a pro, then it’s time to take your moves to the waves!
