How to choose a Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP)
If you’re getting started in the sport of Stand up paddling, and searching for your very first board, here’s some questions you need to ask yourself, and some tips to steer you in the right direction.
What do I want to do with the sport of SUP?
Stand up paddling has become incredibly diverse, so you might find yourself attracted to one, or several disciplines. Have a good think about what you really want to do, and choose a board with that in mind. Remember some boards can cross over between disciplines.
How am I going to transport my SUP?
Getting a 12ft stand up paddle board to the beach without a car can prove quite a challenge. So can storing it! If space or transport is an issue, maybe consider an inflatable board. If not, will roof racks fit on your car?
Who is going to use my SUP?
If it’s for you, and only you, then choosing something specialized is no problem. If the family is getting on board, then durability and versatility is at the top of your list of demands. Consider every person that might use the board, even grandma!
How much can I afford to spend on my SUP?
Will you be buying new or second hand? It matters in terms of price and selection, because there are TONS of second hand boards on offer! The good news for buying your first SUP, is that others have done it before, and might be looking to upgrade. How often will I use my SUP?
Think of how much you’re going to use your board, then halve the value to get a realistic estimate. Life gets in the way, your interest wanes and the sport might not be as exciting as it once was. But then it’s time to buy your second board! Going stand up paddling more than once a week warrants getting something from a reputable brand, of very good quality and performance!
Am I a careful person? What construction do I buy?
Stand up paddle companies call their constructions all kinds of crazy names. Ones with a fiberglass outer layer are cheaper and more durable than Carbon. Inflatable boards are nearly indestructible! How often do you wash your car? If you can’t remember what colour it is under the dust, then maybe consider getting an inflatable board, or at least one made of Fibreglass. This type of person definitely needs a board bag! If you’re more careful with your stuff, carbon or wood becomes an option. You still need a board bag though, but you knew that.
Will I be competing?
If you plan on entering competition, whether racing or surfing, make sure to buy something within the rules. Many racing compeitions have a 12’6 length limit, so buying a 12’6 to begin with might be a good idea! While you might struggle at first, consider buying something a little above your skill level, you’ll grow into it!
What will I do if I don’t like it?
You will like it, but it’s still worth considering the resale value of your first stand up paddle board. Because if you do like it, before long there will be a second board! Generic boards from well known brands are easy to sell. Custom boards and those with niche uses are difficult to sell (like yoga SUPs). If you do want a niche style of board, make sure you choose carefully! (or buy a cheap second hand SUP)
Answering those questions will put you on the path to finding the perfect first stand up paddle board, no matter where you want to go in this incredible sport. Remember, if in doubt, drop by your local stand up paddling retailer for some friendly local advise. Alternatively, ask a question in the stand up paddling forums!
