Get ready for the Nationals - Australian SUP Nationals
For the first time ever, Stand Up Paddling has it’s own event for a national titles. Usually it all gets lumped in with the Australian Surf Festival, but obviously SUP has far outgrown what could possibly be called a ‘fringe discipline’ in surfing, Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark said the huge growth and interest in SUP warranted a standalone national title event.
Hosting the nationals is the mecca of Currumbin on the Gold Coast. It’s a perfect location for both surfing and racing, some have even called it the birthplace of SUP in Australia. Whatever you call it though, Currumbin is no doubt one of the best places in Australia for paddling, and the event is set to be the biggest National titles ever.
Teams from all over Australia are currently training hard, organizing accommodation and shipping boards over to the Gold Coast in preparation. Boards are stickered, sponsors are getting ready and the Gold Coast is always ready for a party. Spectators are in for a treat too, with Currumbin offering the perfect vantage points for both surfing and racing events. If you’ve never been there, mark it down on your calendar and make the drive to watch the countries best paddlers battle it out in front of the famous rocks, in some of the best conditions Australia has to offer stand up paddlers.
We’ll bring you the results, reports and pictures once they happen, the event kicks off on the 7th of November 2013, and runs for three days until the 10th November. That’s the Melbourne Cup weekend, so there’s no excuse not to get down there and cheer on your favorites!
