Dodging Barnacles with Laird Hamilton

10ft swell, stand up paddle board... Yeah, you'd at least think about it!
Thanks to Hurricane Marie off Baja in the USA, the coastline up around Malibu is getting what surfers are calling a once in a lifetime swell. Dropping into these monsters this week, was Laird Hamilton, once again thrusting stand up paddling into the spotlight.

While the worlds surfers were scrambling to get there, Laird was already dropping into these bombs on his stand up paddle board. Nobody expected to what came next, but first let us explain the situation in Malibu.

First, you take off as normal, you turn right and spend a few seconds, maybe 6 riding the monster in. Then, there’s an almighty pier in the way. You have two choices, kick out and catch the next one, or thread between the supports and continue the wave. Mr Hamilton chose option 2. You heard right, the biggest swell of the decade, and Laird is dodging barnacles under the Malibu Pier. It has to be seen to be believed.

These waves really are something special, the period between them is simply staggering. Thanks to some great drone footage in the video below, we can see the whole of Malbibu Bay, in which there’s just three, yes THREE! Monster waves peeling in.

Check out the video to see what we’re on about, which also included footage of surfer Allen Sarlo doing the same thing on a normal shortboard.
