Dave Kalama joins Imagine Stand Up Paddle

The big man joins the big company...
One of the biggest names in stand up paddling is now designing boards for what could become the biggest SUP company in the world, Imagine Surf.

Dave Kalama is probably one of the famous faces that you'd expect to go off and make his own stand up paddling company. In fact for all intents and purposes he had started his own gig after splitting from a long time sponsorship with Naish SUP. Now, according to the latest from Imagine, Kalama has jumped on board as their 'Vice President of Design and Innovation'.

The new role will see Kalama oversee the development of the entire Imagine line, which currently lacks in performance racing models. With Kalamas experience in racing, this is set to turn around quickly and could be yet another big break for the emerging company.

In a recent interview Kalama was asked about what motivated him to make the switch from his own company:
“The people at Imagine and I really have parallel philosophies, they’re people I can work with and enjoy this whole process with. When you talk to your boss everyday or every other day, and collaborate, it’s fun. The relationship is authentic and when you feel good about the people you’re working with that motivates me to want to do a good job for them. It gives me the freedom to create and explore and come up with some really cool stuff.”

So when will his influence start showing up in the product lines? Early 2013 is the current prediction from Imagine. There will be two lines of board, a race board and a surfing orientated board - each available in two sizes. Rumours are that the boards are direct from Kalama's own designs, but only time will tell whether it stays true to the legends design, or if they get toned down for the masses.

Stay tuned to Imagines website for more information, and in the meantime, keep an eye on Daves 'Kalama Kamps' if you want a sneak preview of the new boards...
