Charity SUP a MASSIVE success

Stand Up Paddlers on Currumbin creek, 5th February 2011
Stand up paddlers on the Gold coast have raised over $12,000 for the Premiers Disaster Relief appeal last weekend. Adding to the total of over $205 million raised by Australians since late December.

The event was one of the biggest in Australian Stand Up Paddle history, with over 200 people registered for the event, and many more simply donating to the cause. At last count, the total raised was just over $12,000 - a huge result and something the SUP community can be very proud of. Hats off to the event organisers Paul, Jaimie and Justin too, getting something like this sorted a week before the event is a huge task, and they pulled it off with flying colours.

Over the whole weekend families lined the shoreline, stand up paddlers of all ages, sizes and abilities paddled together giving advice, encouragement and support to others which added to the friendly atmosphere. It was an awesome scene, one to make any Aussie proud.

In the end, only three paddlers dared to paddle 24 hours straight. Paul Jackson, Tim Brimblecombe and Kelly Margetts all made it through, emerging from the water at midday on Sunday, still smiling after the massive effort. Paul Jackson, owner of ROAR Industries, paddled a whopping 145kms over the 24 hour period. To put that in perspective, thats from Currumbin on the Gold Coast all the way to Caloundraon the Sunny coast! Thats insane!

We've heard some great stories of incredibly generous people on the day, like Noel Graham. Someone told him it was $25 per paddler, so he put his name down for 6 hours and came back with $150 - $25 for each hour he wanted to paddle! He still wanted to put the money in, and was persuaded into buying raffle tickets with the extra money. Turns out he won one of the SUP boards donated to the raffle by Coreban. Rather than taking home the shiny new board - Noel auctioned it off, raising another $1000 which, you guessed it - went straight into the donation box. So that was $1150 donated, and 6 hours of paddling from one guy - what a legend!

Word on the forums is that this will be an annual event, donating to a new charity each time. We're sure next year will be even bigger, so keep your eyes peeled on the forums for more details. We'll keep you posted.
