Big and Windy - BOP SUP racing gets extreme!

Big Wipeouts, but the crowd loved it!
Day two dawned big and windy... Remember those Iron Man surf carnivals on TV back in the late 90's? Everyone loved the days where it was absolutely massive through the breakers, and during the heats there were surf boats going everywhere. People getting smacked by paddles, boats running over other boats. Well that's kind of what happened at Day 2 of the Cocoa Beach Paddle Classic in Florida.

As far as battle of the paddle style events go. This would have to be one of the biggest in history. Usually called off in anything but waist high surf, the event organisers took one look at the conditions, another look at the likes of Connor Baxter and Kai Lenny, then said "right, send them out there!" Competitors praised the decision saying that they "wished races were held in these conditions more often." Others mentioned that there was a lot of luck in the racing, particular when the big sets came through, either carrying the slower paddlers through to the frontrunners, or the sets jacking up near the beach and throwing boards all over the place.

It makes for some really good viewing through, so if you like battle of the paddle events, or if you like watching a few good thrills and spills. Hit play below and check it out!
