A feel good Stand Up Paddle video from Rio De Janeiro
You won't find huge waves, gruelling downwind challenges or bikini babes in this video - just good old fashioned stand up paddling fun with some kids in Rio De Janeiro.
Well, ok there might be a few bikini babes, it is Rio after all - but the highlight is the kids having fun on a stand up paddle board for the first time. It doesn't take much to make a kids day in the slums of Nova Holanda (New Holland in english), which is a little suburb in on the coast of Guanabara Bay, Brazil. Guto Azevedo set out to make a small difference for some kids last December, so he took a few stand up paddle boards down to the beach - threw a paddle in their hands and pushed them off... That makes for one pretty awesome day for anyone who's never experienced SUP.
5 or 10 years ago, you'd never think of taking SUP's out on the water in Guanabara Bay; in 2000 an underwater oil pipeline ruptured - spilling 1.3 million litres of oil into the bay and surrounding areas. What used to be an incredible mangrove ecosystem was completely destroyed, and it still remains a barren area with dark murky water and mud - aided of course by the dumping of rubbish and sewage into the water from the entire state of Rio De Janiero. It's all well and good sitting back here in Australia thinking how we'd never SUP in the water over there - but to these kids its normal to get sick from being in the water, it's just what happens...
Check out the video below, it's sure to put a smile on your face...
