12 Towers SUP racing on the Gold Coast - Report and Results

The 12 Towers SUP Race on the Gold Coast

Light winds, sideshore bumps and 100 paddlers off Kirra Beach. Must be the 12 Towers SUP race! Held this weekend on the Gold Coast, the 12 Towers is one of the biggest SUP events on the east coast, but low and behold - who was on top of the podium?

Travis Grant. The local boy and absolute machine of a paddler did it again. Crossing the line over two minutes in front of Beau O'Brien, who incidentally lost by a similar margin in 'The Doctor' race last month in WA. Ex iron-woman Karla Gilbert beat Angie Jackson in the girls fleet. But only by a few seconds. Angie was hot on her tail for the whole race, showing that the girls can be just as fast as the guys! Placing a 20th and 21st overall, it was a stellar effort from both girls, and for Michelle England who came in a few spots back at 25th overall. Poor Angie lost her QB hat in the battle with Karla too, and she was very upset about it in the forums last night. So if you find a QB hat somewhere between Kirra and Burleigh, it's Angies!

Back to the racing though...

Finding runners was hard work on such a day, with light sideshore winds and a messy, choppy shorebreak. Competitors had to work hard for every meter paddled. Rests were few and far between with the runners only lasting a second or two, and to add to it all, the wake of almost 100 paddlers washing around probably didn't help paddlers on their way down the coast to Burleigh Heads.

With the incredible amount of talent on the Gold Coast, even the smallest of competitions are running at international standards. So when something as big as the 12 Towers race wraps up, you can't help but wonder why the likes of Connor Baxter doesn't high tail it over here. Oh yeah, if he came - he'd lose! But jokes aside, the talent on show at this event was second to none. It's such an awesome spectacle to see these guys paddling down their home beaches!
