The marine industry was noticeably absent from the winners podium when the Minister for Trade Simon Crean announced the 13 category award winners in the 2008 Australian Export Awards, Friday 5 December.

Speaking at the National Awards Presentation at the National Gallery of Victoria, Mr Crean said the Australian Export Awards recognise the outstanding achievements of individual Australian enterprises and serve to highlight that the prosperity and employment prospects of all Australians increasingly rely on our ongoing ability to successfully engage with international markets.

The marine sector was not as well represented this year as in previous years, but among the fraternity were Divex Asia Pacific Pty Ltd and the Centre for Customs & Excise Studies.

Divex Asia Pacific Pty Ltd is a world-leading manufacturer and supplier of diving and sub-sea equipment for the military, professional and commercial diving sectors. Since commencing trade in July 2003 Divex Asia Pacific has won several significant export contracts. The company's first substantial export success was the award of a contract to supply closed-circuit breathing apparatus to the Armed Forces of the Philippines' anti-terrorist group, in November 2003. Since then Divex has won contracts in Vietnam, Japan and Australia for similar requirements.

The Centre for Customs & Excise Studies, University of Canberra, provides an international focal point for education, training, consultancy services and research capabilities relevant to customs and excise administrations, related border management agencies, and the private sector. The Centre has established a global reputation for its work in helping to strengthen the organisational capability of customs and excise administrations in many parts of the world.

In excess of 30 training programs are currently being offered by the Centre, all of which reflect world best practice in border management and operational techniques including leadership and management, legal aspects of international trade, supply-chain security, and new and emerging technologies. These programs can be tailored to suit the specific requirements of clients.
