Not everything is about sailing. Sometimes it's just about having fun. And the Whitsunday Fun Race is the best party of the year.
Saturday 12 September is one huge day for the Whitsunday Sailing Club and you don't have to be a sailor to be involved. You can compete in the Fun Race, join a spectator craft or just join in the party afterwards at the Sailing Club. Add $1000.00 prize-money for the Miss Figurehead winner along with bottles of Mt Gay rum for other category winners, and you have the recipe for a fantastic Airlie Beach event.
With the demise of the famous Hamilton Island Race Week lay day at Whitehaven Beach, The Great Whitsunday Fun Race is the last bastion of the traditional yachting party. Started in 1977 to celebrate Airlie Beach as the 'Mecca' of cruising yachts from around the world, the race today is still a celebration of two of Australia's largest yachting regattas - Airlie Beach Race Week and Hamilton Island Race Week.
With so many interstate visitors here for the regattas, September is the perfect time to wind down and host a party for everyone in Airlie Beach to kick-back and enjoy their surroundings. The party is also open to the general public and goes all weekend with entertainment at the Sailing Club from Friday night through to Sunday afternoon. Live Entertainment includes Rock Starts on Vacation, MTK, Jon Griffin and Gunna Duo and entry to the main party on Saturday night is only $10.
The Fun Race starts at 1pm on Saturday 12 September and participants are invited to decorate their yachts and theme costumes for their crew. The waters will be crowded with colourful yachts covered with flags and bunting, crews decked out with imaginative costumes and plenty of spectator craft of every size and style. So don't miss the best party of the year!
