WA Sailing Team into Brazil Quarter Finals

MIRSKY INTO BRAZIL QUARTER FINALS - 25th April, 2008

By John Roberson

Torvar Mirsky and his young crew of Western Australia sailors have made the cut into the quarter finals of the Brazil Sailing Cup in Vitoria, near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, however, with all qualifiers not decided, the draw for pairings has not yet been made.

On another day of light winds, the W.A. team representing the Royal Perth Yacht Club, scored one win and one loss, to end the round robin section of the regatta with a 3 - 2 scoreline.

Their first race of the day was against Sweden's America's Cup skipper Magnus Holmberg, a former winner of the World Match Racing Tour, and his experience showed against the 21 year old Mirsky.

The young West Aussies then secured their quarter-finals berth with a decisive win over Brazilian skipper Daniel Glomb.

Mirsky and his crew of Graeme Spence, Tudur Owen, Kinley Fowler and Matty Adams are gaining a reputation as aggressive sailors early in their international careers, and they have been able to work their way up the international ranking ladder, which gains them more invitations to major events.

The key to their climb up the rankings has been consistent rather than spectacular results, and an ability to get over losses, regain their poise and confidence, and get back to putting scores on the board.

The team has a full calendar of events planned for the northern hemisphere summer.
