12:57 PM Mon 1 Dec 2008 GMT Peter Montgomery or better known as PJ to the sailing fraternity around the world, is a rare breed in sailing since the TV and radio broadcaster is better known to the world than most of the world class sailors, sportsmen and women whose deeds and feats he describes.
When New Zealand yachting sailed the waves of unprecedented popularity in recent years, it was the distinctive voice and style of PJ that stirred the elements and intensity of the competition, which helped raise the public perception of sailing in New Zealand than any other individual.
The voice of New Zealand yachting and world sailing for over 3 decades, Peter Montgomery has covered all the major events including Nine America's Cups, Seven Olympic Games, all Nine Whitbread/Volvo races and all three Monsoon Cup races.
'I came to Malaysia for the first race in 2005 and what I saw was just a conceptual vision and ingenuity of Malaysia's ideas on a skeletal basis with only marquees lining up the Heritage Bay but today there is a world class permanent structure with world class marina facilities to put Terengganu on the world sailing map.
'This is a wonderful venue created for match racing that attracts world class sailors and all these development has taken only three years to accomplish. This has certainly raised the bar in the organisation of sailing events,' said the 61-year-old from Auckland.
This year, PJ would again be the voice behind the broadcast that is expected to reach 1.4 billion households compared to only about 700,000 during the America's Cup.
'I am impressed but though everything looks perfectly alright, the heavy downpours this time is new to me. I have never seen such heavy rain in my past three years here during the monsoon season,' he said.
So popular was his voice that when Hollywood first went sailing in a feature length movie, it was Peter Montgomery who was invited to play the commentator in 'Wind'.
Peter is recognised as an authority on the sport, his skill and commitment are unparelled and recognised across the world and regularly rewarded with accolades.
Peter has been honoured with many awards, including: Sports Journalist of the Year, Sports Broadcaster of the Year, Communicator of the Year, Yachtsman of the Year - 1990 when the New Zealand Yachting Federation awarded their highest honour - The Bernard Ferguson Trophy.
He was also a MBE in the Queens Birthday Honours list in 1995.
Winner of the prestigious SPARC 'Lifetime Contribution to Journalism through Sport' at The New Zealand Sports Journalists Association awards in 2003,
PJ's abilities are not just restricted to commentating on sailing - he is a successful sports broadcaster who hosts the No 1 rating show SPORTSWORLD every Sunday on Newstalk ZB and Radio Sport, and he has been a long time member of the Radio Rugby Team in Auckland as the sideline eye.
Peter is also a trustee of the New Zealand International Yachting Trust as well as a member/vice patron of several other yachting related organisations.
