No matter whether you are an old sea dog or a newcomer to boating, the weather will treat you the same. But you can be prepared for the best or the worst in weather - like today, Wednesday, 26 August, when it snowed on Hobart's Mount Wellington and the chilly westerlies gusted to 40 knots, sending the city's temperature diving to 6 degrees at 4pm.
Let's hope the weather is better next month when Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania member and noted meteorologist Kenn Batt presents a two-day seminar, 'The Ultimate Course in Weather' at the RYCT in Hobart over the weekend of 12 and 13 September, aimed at taking skippers and crew members to a greater level in understanding the weather.
Kenn grew up among yachts in Hobart and has completed many significant ocean races, both in Australia and overseas. He is currently the senior forecaster and manager of the Canberra office of the Bureau of Meteorology.
There will be three to get some of Kenn's expertise on weather going back more than three decades from this informative and entertaining weatherman:
Weather 101: This is the basic understanding of weather and it will run for one day on Saturday, 12 September at a cost of $55 for RYCT members and $65 for non-members.
Weather 201: This is all about advanced weather understanding, including long ocean racing/cruising in mid-latitudes as well as the tropics. It also will run for one day on Sunday, 13 September at a cost of $55 for RYCT members and $65 for non-members.
Weather 301: The complete picture, combining the Weather 101 and Weather 201 curriculum over both days at a cost of $100 for RYCT members and $120 for non-members.
For bookings, please contact RYCT reception on (03) 6223 4599 or sailing manager Nick Corkhill on 0400 024 823.
