Korean Match Race Cup Qualifier. The first day was held in 10-13 knots in flat water. Wind went left throughout the day and freshened. Boat handling was the key to the day. The Kiwis (Laurie Jury and Rueben Corbett) ended up the top of the table without losing any races.
Team Edake did well winning three out of five races. The two losses were to both kiwi teams. However, they did win a crucial match against the all girl crew skippered by the US Olympian Sally Barkow and were not far behind the two top Kiwi teams. This set them up in a good position on the table for day 2 of the round robins. David did a very good job in the pre starts and put the lesser experienced teams out of contention with penalties before that starting gun was even fired.
The following day the winds were much lighter and the direction was further left. The tidal flow was creating a lot of issues as the drop was 5.3 metres. The conditions were very difficult for the PRO David Tallis to get the racing underway. However, he did a very good job in these very difficult circumstances. With the wind much lighter the Korean boats came out fighting with good local knowledge of the area and the conditions. They were very competitive against all the overseas teams in these conditions.
Team Edake was behind the Japanese boat on the first rounding but went left downhill while the Japanese went right. At the bottom mark the Australian team was in front and held this position to the finish. All was set up for a further two wins against the Korean teams. However, the wind god and some poor decisions led to two losses. After the finish the remaining two flights were abandoned by the Race Committee who felt that conditions were no longer suitable.
Tomorrow will be the last day of the round robbin and it is expected that some of the semis may be held. There are two flights left and it is going to be a tight position for the last two spots in the semis. The two Kiwi teams of Laurie Jury and Ruben Corbett are through and the last race of the flights is between these two teams. This will prove a very interesting match.
Team Edake must now wait and see what happens in the next two flights to see if we have made it through to the semis.
