It was a glorious day on the Palma day and the 113-strong fleet enjoyed excellent conditions. Despite a short-lived postponement ashore earlier in the morning, the breeze came in right as expected at 10 knots and reached up to 18 late in the afternoon. The 30-degree shift that took place in the first race made tacticians work harder.
Platoon is leading the TP52 class, with a 1st and 3rd in the day's two races. In the GP42 class the score table is as tight as possible after three races, with Near Miss on top.
In the GP42 fleet the 1st race saw a fierce battle between AIRIS and Desaf?o right from the start. AIRIS won the race, a mere 2 seconds ahead of Desaf?o while Caser-Quum finished third. The second race was dominated by Near Miss that earlier paid the price of their tactical choices. The Swiss yacht kept the lead till the finish line, crossing 48 seconds ahead of Desaf?o and 52 ahead of Canarias Puerto Calero. With the breeze reaching 18 knots at the third race, Near Miss kept its leadership. The 2008-generation Italian boats, AIRIS and Roma GP42.2 finished second and third respectively.
The first race of the TP52 class had German accent as Jochen Shuemann drove the Platoon AUDI boat to victory, ahead of Vasco Vascotto's Mutua Madrile?a and Matador who climbed their way through the fleet. In the second race, Dean Barker drove Brib?n to victory, followed by Caixa Galicia and Platoon. The Germans are now at the lead of the Copa del Rey AUDI MAPFRE.
The Spanish AIFOS keeps sweeping the IRC 1 class. The former TP52 yacht scored another two bullets today, on top of yesterday's other two. Sir Peter Ogden's Spirit of Jethou is now firmly second with Philip Mecklenburg's Moana third.
The Venetian Give me Five maintained her leadership in the IRC 2 class as well as her 2-point distance from second-placed Tony Buckingham's Ngoni. Both yachts scored a 1st and a 5th today. Itaca IX climbed to 3rd place.
Blue Nights, the Finnish yacht owned by Ekengren-Sauren wasn't able to maintain her leadership at the SWAN 45 class after an OCS in the day's second race. As a result, Codecasa's and Battistela's yacht, Jeroboam Ca'Nova, is now first while Vittorio Ruggero's Talj is lying second. The podium is entirely Italian, with Danilo Salsi's DSK-Comifin in third place. Still, the best performer today was Klaus Diedrichs' Fever with a 3rd and a 1st but yesterday's results didn't allow her to grab the top spot.
In the X-35's, Thorckild Juncker's Cool Runnings is the undisputed leader, with a 4th and 1st in today's two races. Stefano Trifiro's X-Trifix and John Parker's Perfect Ten are second and third.
In the ORC 670 class the Daniele Augusti's Cometal-Ferrobeton grabbed leadership from Jes?s Pintos' Navantia, after scoring two 2nds. The Spanish yacht, with a 1st and a 7th, is now one point behind the leader and just one point ahead of third-placed Vell Mar?, the best-performing locals in this regatta.
The ORC 570 class is a purely Iberian affair. Icaro, owned by Carles Rodr?guez, proved more consistent and claimed overall leadership, taking advantage of the 5th and OCS by Portuguese Jos? Manuel Mesquita's Luso-Roux. Second position is now held by Gustavo Mart?nez Doreste's Hempel-Power Plate, two points behind Icaro. Third placed is Pasi?n x Castell?n Costa Azahar.
