Southern 80 Race Cancelled

7:21 AM Sun 8 Feb 2009 GMT
NSW Maritime was forced to cancel racing in the Club Marine Southern 80 waterski event on the Murray River today after three event ambulance crews had to be diverted to the bushfire effort.

Maritime Regional Manager Scott Kidd said, 'It was necessary to 'red flag' the race at 1350hrs today. The decision was made for safety reasons in consultation with other agencies and the event organisers.

'We had five ambulance crews on standby for the event but with three crews being called to assist with the bushfire effort, it became unwise and unsafe to continue.

'The two remaining ambulance crews also had to be ready to assist in Echuca and surrounding areas.

'The oranisers understand the priority at the moment is to assist those in greatest need.'

Mr Kidd said the 2009 event was about 70 per cent complete but was now over.
