Slow Day in Brazil for WA fleet

SLOW DAY IN BRAZIL - 24th April 2008.

By John Roberson

It was a slow old day in Brazil's Vitoria on Wednesday, and at the end of it Western Australia's young sailors on the Mirsky Racing Team had nothing to show for it, they didn't get a single race.

The Brazil Sailing Cup, where Torvar Mirsky and his crew had a good opening day on Tuesday, was plagued by light winds yesterday, which caused the event to drop behind schedule, with further delays caused by equipment problems with some of the boats.

The up side of this frustrating day for Mirsky, his bowman Graeme Spence, tailer Tudur Owen, trimmer Kinley Fowler and mainsheet man Matty Adams, is that they are still well positioned in their group when they get out on the water again today.

The event organisers described the conditions as "An unusually light and shifty northerly breeze".

Hopefully Thursday will provide a decent breeze, which will allow Torvar's team to put in strong performances in their scheduled matches against Swedish America's Cup skipper Magnus Holmberg, and local hero Daniel Glomb.

The top three teams in this initial round robin series will progress to the quarter-finals, with Mirsky Racing Team currently in third place.
