Sailing withdrawn from Olympic Youth Festival

9:16 PM Fri 31 Oct 2008 GMT
We regret to inform you that in discussions with the AOC today, it has been agreed that Sailing should be withdrawn from the Australian Youth Olympic Festival, scheduled to take place from 14-18 January.

In the last few days, three of the six confirmed international teams have withdrawn, with a further two stating that they do not intend to bring full teams.

Most have indicated that the current economic situation has been a major factor in the decision to withdraw.

Clearly selection of the team(s) to represent Australia has also been proving something of a challenge, with the number of places never being clear.

Obviously both Yachting Australia and the AOC very much regret having to make this decision. However the issue is being driven by factors that are outside the organisers immediate control. We would like to extend our thanks to both the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron and Performance Sailcraft Australia for their support in planning for the event.
