Alinghi and Emirates Team New Zealand were off the dock sharp at 0930 hours this morning, cheered by crowds on the dock and saluted by boat's horns and sirens. The crews are racing the ETNZ boats, with Alinghi sailing NZL 92 and the Kiwis NZL 84.
First race is scheduled to start at 1100 on the red course.
Conditions should be excellent for racing. A cold front passed over Auckland last night, clearing out record humidity and heat and the airflow is now from the south-west. ETNZ weather guru 'Clouds' Badham told the morning team briefing that winds should be at 200 deg at 20-22 knots with a possible peak around 1400 hours of 20-25 knots with higher gusts.
The race committee is expected to start at least three of the best-of-seven races today, with the balance tomorrow. The forecast for Saturday is for early rain and then a dry day with the breeze out of the east at 14-18 knots.
Sail-World is currently on the water and is expecting to be able to file images and reports at the end of each race.
