Powerboat P1 has announced an agreement with the Croatian city of Split to host the opening round of the 2010 World Championship season.

The race will be held in conjunction with the Croatia Boat Show which has been held in the historic coastal port city for the past 11-years.

Powerboat P1 commercial director, Robert Wicks, said he was delighted to have concluded arrangements with the city and the boat show organisers.

'This promises to be an excellent showcase for P1 in the Adriatic', he declared.

'It is an event that will generate significant income for the local economy, extend its tourist season and P1's extensive media coverage will help raise the profile of both the city and the country as a leading water sports destination.

'We believe this is evidence of the growing role that Powerboat P1 plays as a premier marketing platform for the worldwide marine industry,' he added.

The event in Croatia will be promoted locally by Tomislav Misetic' of A.M. Info Media.

'We recognise the value and potential of Powerboat P1 and what it can add to our city as an international destination,' Misetic' said.

'Given our experience in the local marine industry and our enthusiasm for the sport of powerboat racing, we felt this was the perfect opportunity to showcase the city of Split and the Croatian Boat Show,' he added.

Details of the 2010 opening event will be announced in the coming months.

Powerboat P1 will launch its 2009 season over the weekend of May 8-10 from the Mediterranean island of Malta, which will be hosting its sixth Grand Prix of the Sea.

The World Championship then moves on to rounds in Turkey, Sweden, Italy and the Kingdom of Bahrain.
