Poralu Marine, which has lately participated in the 2nd 'Marinas and Sustainable Development' National Meetings organised at Brest (France) on 11th and 12th June by the IDEAL association of local authorities and Finist?re General Council, intends to show its commitment to sustainable development.
Respect for the environment as well as its internal organisation are the main themes, making Poralu Marine the 1 PME (small to medium sized company) from the Ain d?partement to commit to this approach, with support from the local CCI [Chamber of Commerce and Industry] with the intention of achieving ISO 14 001 certification.
According to the organisers' brief, 'consideration of sustainable development in laying out marinas is one of the increasingly important considerations in policies followed by local authorities and their various contacts, whether they be public or private'. This is why the exhibition wants to be a forum for exchanges where everybody can demonstrate by sharing his experience that it is possible to 'develop economic activities and tourism around the marina while preserving the environment in which they are evolving'.
This meeting is also the occasion to return to the problem which the increasing demand for moorings is posing in marinas and to discuss new solutions proposed to meet this. A scenario in which Poralu Marine can air its expertise with the 'Mobi-Deck' concept, a system of floating mobile pontoons shown for the first time on 3rd November 2007 at Cap d'Agde (34) which provides a gain of 30 to 40% of moorings over the same harbour area. The 2 event days have allowed some 300 national decision makers to meet sailing professionals such as Poralu Marine.
Poralu Marine, which is today acknowledged as a skilled and innovative professional in its field is now trying also to be a responsible player by controlling the impacts of its business. As Bruno BELIN, Technical Manager at Poralu Marine, explains, 'the ecological impact is a major variable largely built in to our design process, whether this be in terms of the weight of material used or in the choice of materials and this is why all the products which we place on the market today can have a 2nd life'.
Indeed, aluminium, chosen by Poralu Marine as an exclusive material for its goods, is infinitely recyclable and its conversion takes less energy compared with production from raw materials. The polyethylene from which the floats are made, the different plastic parts and the synthetic materials forming the planking are also recyclable and can be used in building and automobile construction. 'Our commitment is not limited to production, it embodies consideration of the end of the product's life. Infrastructure dismantling is a fundamental phase and we will look particularly carefully at dispatching the various items to the appropriate sites, whether they were designed and installed by Poralu Marine or not', emphasised Bruno Belin.
Optimising products to limit the quantity of material needed is also a major research focus on which Poralu Marine's engineering division has been concentrating for more than eighteen months. In parallel with its production policy, the company chooses to promote more ecological solutions for some products which are not managed in house: a recent contract, the installation of which is planned in September 2008, stipulates the use of a helical sea anchorage to replace the concrete blocks normally used. 'It seemed interesting to us to promote this system, because of its positive effect on aquatic fauna, reductions in the material used and in the transport load, with the known effects of diesel pollution' commented Bruno Belin.
Founded in 1982, Poralu Marine designs, manufactures, installs and markets top-of-the-range systems for marinas in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and North America. Adventurous by nature, Poralu Marine was one of the first in its field to use aluminium as the exclusive structure for pontoons. With the backing of a R&D department at the forefront of technology Poralu Marine now offers an extensive range of products: diving rafts, leisure pontoons, private jetties, etc.,gangways, catwalks, landing stages, etc. With 25 years' experience and over 30,000 moorings installed worldwide, Poralu Marine is now one of the leading brands in the pontoons and marinas sector.
