9:03 AM Sun 30 Nov 2008 GMT Despite the prevailing restrictions on air travel, Asia's top annual regatta is set to go ahead with its official launch as scheduled with all the participating crews and families already in Phuket.
Now in its 22nd year, the Phuket King's Cup Regatta under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King, is organised by the Phuket King's Cup Regatta Organising Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket.
Simon James the regatta's Race Management Director said, 'We're especially pleased that in view of the uncertainty that exists with regard to airline travel in and out of Bangkok all arrangements for the regatta are in place.
The size of the registered fleet is encouraging in light of the ongoing situation at Bangkok's airports and represents an enduring commitment from the many regulars as well as indicating keen interest from new entries who look forward to a great week of racing. We're now all looking forward with great excitement to what we believe will not only be a great sailing event but a timely exhibition of true sportsmanship and camaraderie, both on and off the water.'
Kevin Whitcraft president of the Phuket King's Cup Regatta Organizing Committee was also keen to point out that this year's increase in the number of entries means spectators will see some of the best and most closely contested racing in an event that also benefits from upgraded race equipment including several new markers, ground tackle, and pennants.
The Third Naval Area Command, Royal Thai Navy, which is based in Phuket has fully supported and facilitated the event with logistics as well as their equipment, officers, boat, helicopter and SEAL unit for security and rescue. The organizing committee and principal sponsor, Raimon Land recently held a signing ceremony to commemorate Raimon Land's commitment to a 5 year sponsorship deal.
Raimon Land will once again organize the popular closing party on Saturday, December 6th guaranteeing a memorable end to what is expected to be another great week of activities. They will also be hosting number of events such as a property seminar and their renowned and extensive corporate hospitality programs throughout the week.
Raimon Land CEO Mr. Nigel Cornick said, 'We're pleased to be continuing our support of the Phuket King's Cup Regatta for another five years. The positive impact the regatta brings on the sport of sailing in Thailand as well as the local economy of Phuket is outstanding. We are proudly presenting our latest property, the prestigious Amalfi this year in conjunction with the regatta, so our sponsorship is one of the special ways we can give back to the community that has given so much to Raimon Land.'
Kata Group, host sponsor for over a decade has made available their superb Kata Beach Resort on Kata Beach as venue for the Regatta as well as their recently award winning 'Best Family Hotel' voted by Thomascook.com, Phuket Orchid Resort to accommodate all press and media.
Sponsorship of the event this year will be helped by many organizations with interests in Phuket. Mom Tri's Boathouse has helped for over a decade. Thailand Elite, Siam Winery, Thai Bev and Sunsail. Media sponsorship in part comes from Phuket Magazine, The Nation, Phuket Gazette, Yacht Style and the Ensign Media
