Mounts Bay Sailing Club are hosting the 29er and 49er National Championships from January 1st - 5th 2009 and club personnel have been busy preparing for the event.

The regatta consisting of 14 short, intense races will be held in the on the waters of Matilda bay in Swan River directly in front of the club. The flat waters of Matilda bay, combined with the afternoon 'Fremantle Doctor' should provide some close racing and spectacular kite runs.

Current 29er World Champion Steve Thomas from Mounts Bay Sailing Club has moved to 49ers with new crew Luke Parkinson. Steve's former 29er gold medal crew Jasper Warren has teamed up with local champion Dave Mann.

As a lead up to the regatta Steve, and another local 49er sailor Tom Johnson, have been campaigning their boats at the SIRs and Sail Melbourne regattas. Former 49er National Champion Dennis Jones will also be in strong contention for the 49er Championship, so the field is wide open.

Mounts Bay Sailing Administrator, and keen 49er sailor, Kynan Wall is expecting around 40 entries for the regatta from around Australia and New Zealand. Numbers of both the 29er and 49er classes at the club has dramatically increased in the last year. In a recent lead up to the National event Yachting Western Australia hosted the Inaugural WA Sail Classic- an exciting short course series for 29ers and 49ers right in front of the city with a large crowd of on-lookers.

Spectators are welcome to watch the racing from the Mounts Bay Sailing Club balcony. It will be spectacular!

After the National regatta the 29ers will travel and hour south to Mandurah for the National Youth Championships.
