Britain's Barry Parkin and Tim Hall have taken a five point lead lead after day two at the Audi Flying 15 World Championship on Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne. Grant Alderson and Dean Mcaullay of Australia are in second place with Steve Goacher and Phil Evans in third place after three races.
Three nationalities are represented in the top five overall after the second day of racing. Britain lead the series after two races were sailed today, however in contrast to yesterday the racing was not just a contest between the top three crews, with the third race being the divider in the points score.
Racing was difficult in the light conditions allowing the British crew of Barry Parkin and Tim Hall (GBR) to take the overall lead in the series through consistent sailing. Their win in the second race of the series was backed up with a sixth, lifting them through to the points lead by four points.
In contrast to the sea breezes of yesterday, racing was initially postponed before getting underway in a light breeze of around five knots from 165 degrees - east of south and an indication that the sea breeze might not eventuate.
After several general recalls the fleet got underway for Race 2, a perfectly balanced line with top boats splitting between the boat and pin ends. Alderson and Mcaullay chose the left, with Goacher and Evans preferring the right, both getting off to good clean starts.
Both were beaten to the top mark by Parkin and Hall, however, who led the way down the next run while Alderson and Mcaullay, and Goacher and Evans match-raced for position behind them.
By the next rounding, Parkin and Hall had been overtaken, but then gained the lead back to eventually win the morning's race - and lodge a first place for the series. Alderson and Mcaullay were second with Goacher and Evans third. Alan Bax and Bill Masterman (GBR) took fifth and Aaron Goodmanson and Alister Rowlands (NZL) sixth.
Race 3 was the upset of the series for the series leaders, with Australia's Alderson and Mcaullay picking up a 13th place and Goacher and Evans one back in 14th place. Parkin and Hall played it safer and emerged with a sixth, their second of the series to take the series lead.
Britain's Mike Hart and Richard Rigg 36th place of the morning turned into a first in the afternoon's race. David Tucker and Matt Summers of New Zealand took second place, with Veronica and Ben Falat (GBR) in third place. Kiwi teams, Murray Gilbert and Jonathan Burgen were in fourth place and Craig Coulan and Adrienne Rekke in fifth.
It was not originally planned to sail two races today, however a forecast for stronger winds later in the week prompted officials to schedule an additional race to give themselves some leeway in the race schedule.
In the Classic Fleet, Australians Clive Arnold and Phillip Parish (AUS 2251) added two wins to go six points clear of second placed Peter Mullenger (AUS2116) with Phillip Lammonby and Deanna Wilson (AUS2672) moving into third overall.
In the Silver Fleet, Steve and Megan Cranch (AUS3167) have a clean sheet after three races, with Ronald Joseph and Laurie Hatch (AUS3058) in second and David and Michael Arnold (AUS1690) third.
