New fishing rules apply this Easter in Queensland

If you're planning on wetting a line this long weekend, make sure your catch complies with Queensland's new fishing rules.

Minister for Primary Industries, Fisheries and Rural and Regional Queensland Tim Mulherin said as at 1 March 2009 there were new minimum size limits and more restrictive bag limits for some species.

Mr Mulherin said: "These new bag and/or size limits apply to a range of species including whiting and flathead, which are very popular with recreational fishers.

"The minimum size limits have been increased to allow many species to spawn at least once before capture.

"With about 750,000 recreational fishers in Queensland, these new rules ensure that future stocks will still be there in years to come, and will help maintain a balanced catch between the different fishing sectors."

Mr Mulherin said the changes were not only for the East Coast but many were also for the Gulf fisheries.

"So far recreational fishers throughout State are working well within the new rules.

"There has been a huge demand for information on the new fishing rules which means people understand that they need to comply with the changes.

"Recreational fishers deserve a pat on the back, as our officers in the field have reported very few problems with people not following the new rules.

"The quickest and easiest way for fishers to make sure they have the latest information is to download the new fishing guide before setting out this weekend," Mr Mulherin said.

The new fishing guide can be downloaded at www.dpi.qld.gov.auAlternatively, call 13 25 23.
