12:39 PM Sat 20 Dec 2008 GMT Powerboat P1 event promoter Philippe Benhamou has announced the launch of a new French team, planning to compete in the Evolution class in 2009.
The Team Quai 222 outfit will use a revamped Fountain 41 hull, powered by Mercury engines as it enters the series for the first time at the series opener in Bahrain on March 26-28.
The 1999-built Fountain 41 closed-canopy hull - once owned by prominent US racer Dave Branch - has had a successful racing history in the US, but was comprehensively rebuilt in 2007.
Powerboat P1 co-founder and Tunisian Grand Prix of the Sea event promoter Benhamou will run the team in conjunction with boat owner and pilot Bernard Sintes, while Max Dessaux will take the position of throttleman.
'Our launch event was a big success,' Benhamou said. 'All our sponsors enjoyed discovering the boat and are ready for Bahrain. We also had the pleasure of meeting [French powerboat racer] Eric Brotons, who won one of the races in Key West this year. He will probably join our team with another boat for the season.
'Our ambition for our first year is to finish all the races in 2009, and to have some fun on the way.'
