NZ Marine Industry Deemed 'Fastest Growing'

'Peter Busfield, Executive Director of NZ Marine Industry Association' .
The latest Market Economics Survey in New Zealand has put the marine industry as one of the fastest growing in the country.

Worth $2.2 billion to the New Zealand economy, the marine industry counts exports as a main contributor, increasing 14% over the past two years and expected to grow $1.8 billion by 2015.

New Zealand Marine executive director Peter Busfield says exports have reached $717 million.

He says superyachts play a major part in those export sales, with New Zealand rated as one of the most desirable countries in the world to have a super yacht built.

But NZ Marine warns that their billion dollar contribution to the economy could be killed by apartment developments in Auckland. The association has been fighting for boat builders to remain at the new Wynyard quarter development at Westhaven.

Busfield says the industry needs the waterfront access to commission New Zealand-built superyachts and is adamant that the industry would not be where it is today if it were not able to operate out of Wynyard point.
