10:05 AM Fri 27 Mar 2009 GMT NSW Maritime Boating Safety Officers will be out on Botany Bay and Port Hacking this weekend (March 28-29) conducting random safety checks.
Ports and Waterways Minister Joe Tripodi said skippers are responsible for the safety of all on board their vessels and must ensure they have the required safety equipment before setting out on a boating trip.
'Safety equipment requirements vary for the size and class of vessel, but there are some uniform standards such as the need to carry a lifejacket for each person on board.' Mr Tripodi said.
'Lifejackets must be used when crossing a coastal bar, or in times of heightened risk, and it is up to the skipper to ensure compliance with these safety equipment regulations.'
Mr Tripodi said a recent incident at the Jibbon Bombora when four people were thrown into the water when their vessel was hit by a rogue wave highlighted the importance of complying with safety regulations.
'Thankfully when they were rescued all were found to be wearing a lifejacket.
'Unfortunately, in a similar incident at the same location last year, one person drowned after two people not wearing lifejackets were thrown into the water.
'On each occasion before going boating skippers should check their vessels' safety equipment.' Mr Tripodi said.
