'Sanctuary Cove Boat Show will be the venue of the NMSC summit.' .
National Marine Safety Committee (NMSC) will host a summit on recreational boat standards that will coincide with the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in May 2009.

It will be held May 22 to follow the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) committee's technical meetings in May on the Gold Coast, Queensland.

A statement noted that the Summit will build on previous World Standards Summits and focus on the efforts of major boating standards organisations to harmonise different standards applying in the world market.

Organisers said they will also host standards experts from the US and Europe to present reports as well as invite the local boating industry before the Sanctuary Cove boat show. Many of the experts will be in Australia for a meeting of the international standards committee on small craft (ISO/TC 188).

The Summit will also highlight current issues affecting the design and construction of recreational boats.

'Clearly, the goal is to have one set of safety standards that is acceptable in all countries. Aligning the standards used in the US and Europe would make life a lot easier for Australian companies exporting pleasure craft,' said John Henry, NMSC's Acting CEO, in the statement. 'Even if there's resistance to changing long-standing local requirements, at least we should try to agree on a common approach to new challenges.'

There will also be a dinner on May 21 before the all-day summit. 'It is an ideal opportunity to 'break the ice' before the seminar and meet with the ISO experts,' said Henry.
