Less than a month to go until Pittwater becomes the battle ground for exciting, competitive one design racing in the Melges 24 and Melges 32 fleets.
The second event on the 2011 -12 Melges Regatta Schedule is the East Coast Championships (5 - 6 November), hosted by the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club in conjunction with Pittwater Festival of Sail.
Crews are preparing for close one design racing which is sure to get the adrenalin pumping and cause some on water carnage. Slam have thrown their support behind the Melges classes and partnered with Melges Asia Pacific providing exclusive Melges crew gear and event sponsorship.
Both Melges fleets are seeing increased growth in new and used boats with competitors looking to challenge their crews in the one design arena. One design racing is the truest test of sailing performance. All boats are equal; success is achieved through the crew's competence and team work. International and National Associations support the classes and ensure that strict one design rules are followed. Positions on the racecourse are transparent and crews can rate their performance and work on strategies to learn and improve their results. Competition is always tight sometimes seconds deciding a series of places.
